Recipe for a Safe and Clean Kitchen

by Steve Blumberg, Regional Manager, Spartan Chemicals

The best foods come from a clean kitchen and properly managing the cleaning chemicals used inside your kitchen is paramount to keeping your patrons and employees safe and healthy. Today, I will be discussing a few considerations for managing your kitchen chemical program to ensure that you’re following the right recipe for safety.

Where are we going to store these products?

Proper chemical storage is a critical consideration for the safety of those working in the kitchen. A locked area for chemical storage helps to keep employees safe and can prevent accidental spillage or misuse of the product. Locked storage areas can also limit access to those who have proper safety and handling training and can help management enforce proper use and application of chemicals.

Do we have proper labels for products we are using?

Accurate and clear labels on your products, dispensers and spray bottles is crucial to a healthy chemical program. When working with chemical concentrates and dilutions we recommend that every bottle and chemical product is clearly labeled to help guide your employees and to avoid any errors in use or hazardous mixing.

Do we have the proper SDS book for the kitchen cleaning chemical?

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) includes information such as the properties of each chemical; the physical, health, and environmental health hazards; protective measures; and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical. Having SDS available is required by law, and is often checked during routine inspections. Even more importantly however, these sheets discuss all the precautions that should be taken in the event of an incident of any kind. They can also provide key information to first responders in the event of an incident. Your distributor should be able to help you create and update your SDS book at your location. These should be kept near the location of the products.

Finding a cleaning chemical supplier that partners with you will help you through this process and provide the resources and guidance you need to easily manage your cleaning chemicals safely—allowing you more time to focus on the recipes that truly matter in your kitchen.
